Causes of
infertility
Obviously,
causes of infertility can relate back to the
man, the woman, or both parties. There are various different
causes of infertility – and in fact there are so many
possible factors that can go astray from the moment of
intercourse to the next menstrual period being due, that
sometimes, it can seem a miracle that anyone does get
pregnant! Age also increases the chances of infertility as
is commonly known.
There are various physical causes
of infertility that reside within the male or female
reproductive system and there are also other causes of
infertility that are due to sexual or lifestyle habits as
described below.
Female
causes of infertility
·
Endometriosis is a common cause
of infertility, which is where the endometrial tissue can grow
outside the womb and cause damage to the ovaries or fallopian
tubes, heavy, painful and irregular periods, as well as
repeated miscarriages.
·
Ovulation problems are another
obvious cause of infertility. Such problems affect the
production and release of an egg from the woman’s ovaries
during the menstrual period. Similarly, the actual egg itself
may be abnormal due to damage or chromosomal
abnormality.
·
Polycystic ovary syndrome which
occurs as a result of small cysts on the ovaries also cause
infertility in women (see our section ‘pcos and pregnancy’ for
more information)
·
Finally, blocked tubes in the
female reproductive system also cause problems for women trying
to concieve.
Male causes
of infertility
·
Males can also see problems
surrounding blocked tubes in the male reproductive system that
can lead to infertility
·
There can also be problems with
the man’s sperm in that there may be a low sperm count, the
sperm’s mobility may not be very good ie. it may not move well
inside the woman in order to navigate it’s way fully to the
uterus
·
Allergy to sperm which is an
immune system reaction to sperm cells however there is still
some controversy around these
diagnoses.
Other than the physical
aspects that reside within the male or female
reproductive system, there are also some other causes
of infertility that are caused by poor sexual or lifestyle
habits that can be easily remedied. Some of these
easily treated lifestyle habits are things such as heavy use of
alcohol, smoking or drug use, poor diet, tight underwear on the
man which can decrease sperm count due to and increase in
temperature, and stress in either the man or the woman. Changes
to sexual habits can also help including changing the timing of
sex according to the woman’s ovulation cycles and avoiding
sexual lubricant which can interfere with the survival of the
man’s sperm.
