ICSI treatment

ICSI treatment or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a procedure which is undertaken alongside IVF (in vitro fertilization). ICSI treatment is effective for women having trouble conceiving, however, the side effects of the drugs can be quite annoying for the woman. ICSI is typically a procedure that takes place because of male infertility problems. Because the man may have a low sperm count, weak sperm or the sperm maybe nonexistent within the semen, the sperm cannot fertilize the egg. The procedure works by taking an egg from the woman, a sperm from the man and manually fertilizing the egg outside of the womb. Once the egg is successfully fertilized, it is placed back in the uterus and nature continues the process.

ICSI treatment can be broken down and divided into 5 stages as follows;

1. Still Ovaries

The first stage of ICSI treatment begins with the woman taking a drug to stop the normal functioning of the ovaries. This is important in order to set up the ovaries for the next stage of the treatment.

2. Follicle Production

The second stage involves the woman taking a fertility drug to increase and grow more follicles in the ovaries, from here the ovary follicles will mass produce a large number of eggs to be fertilized.

3. Maturing the Eggs

After the ovary follicles produce the eggs, they will need to be mature before they can be successfully fertilized. The woman takes another fertility drug to aid this process and the eggs start to mature at a faster rate than normal.

4. Egg Collection

When the eggs are mature enough, they will be taken from the ovary follicles manually with the help of ultra sound equipment. The male then contributes the sperm to be used to fertilize the egg. This is the part of the procedure that involves anomalies, because under the normal conditions of pregnancy, the strongest sperm will find and penetrate the egg. During ICSI treatment, the sperm will need to be injected into the egg, and the sperm will be picked at random to complete fertilization. If the sperm that is chosen is not strong enough or is not of good quality then this can lead to birth defects or problems later on in the pregnancy. Usually the main reason for ICSI is because of problems with the man’s sperm, so taking a chance with the sperm is also one of the gambles of ICSI.

5. Embryo Replacement

The final stage in ICSI treatment is the embryo replacement. Once the egg is successfully fertilized, it will be put back into the uterus wall manually and will hopefully continue to grow into a healthy baby.

Generally, for a couple to resort to ICSI treatment they must have exhausted all other forms of fertility treatment. Before looking seriously into ICSI treatment I would recommend taking a look into a product called Pregnancy Miracle.
